What Can’t I Store in My Self Storage Unit in Brussels?

Yeti Walking With Box

Brussels has many charms: excellent beer, reliable public transport, and a healthy respect for paperwork, but spacious homes aren’t usually one of them. Whether you’re living in a narrow townhouse or renting a compact flat, finding room for the things you don’t use every day can be a challenge. That’s where a self storage unit becomes a practical solution.

Before you begin loading boxes, though, it’s worth asking: “What can’t I store in my self storage unit in Brussels?”

While storage units are great for keeping your belongings safe, there are limits to what’s allowed inside. Some items simply aren’t safe, legal or hygienic to store, and it’s good to know what’s off limits before you show up with a car boot full of questionable choices.

Why Are There Restrictions on What You Can Store?

It might seem like a storage unit is just a private space you rent, but it’s part of a shared facility. That means everything inside must be safe not only for you, but also for other customers, staff and the surrounding environment.

Rules exist to protect everyone. Some materials pose fire risks, some attract pests, and others fall under legal restrictions in Brussels. We work hard to keep the storage facility secure, clean and comfortable, and those rules help us keep it that way.

What Can’t I Store in My Self Storage Unit in Brussels?

Hazardous Materials

Anything flammable, explosive or chemically unstable isn’t permitted. That includes petrol, paint thinners, gas canisters, fireworks, fertilisers and industrial cleaners. These hazardous materials can cause real harm if not properly handled and have no place in a self storage unit.

Even everyday household chemicals can become dangerous in an enclosed space. If something needs to be carefully stored under specific conditions, it likely doesn’t belong here.

Perishable Items

Food, plants and anything with an expiry date are considered perishable items and aren’t allowed in storage. Brussels is no stranger to sudden heatwaves or damp spells, which can spoil stored food quickly and invite mould or unwanted pests.

Trying to store perishable items can also put other customers’ units at risk. If it needs a fridge or fresh air, it’s not suitable for a storage unit.

Living Creatures or Pets

No animals, ever. That includes pets, insects, birds or anything else that breathes. It’s not only unethical but illegal, and our units are not designed for living creatures. Please don’t bring a pet hamster, even if it’s “just for the weekend”.

Uninsured or Illegal Goods

This might seem obvious, but anything illegal is strictly prohibited. That includes counterfeit items, stolen goods, unlicensed weapons and other items that wouldn’t pass a police check. To keep your belongings safe, we insist that clients take minimal insurance covering good to the value of €2,000.

Storing Wooden Furniture and Long-Term Storage

Wooden furniture can be stored for the long term, but it requires some care. Brussels humidity can cause warping or mildew if items aren’t packed properly. Use breathable packaging materials, cover furniture with blankets or fabric wraps, and keep it off the floor using pallets or boards.

How to Prepare Your Belongings for Safe Storage

A little preparation goes a long way. Use sturdy boxes, label clearly, and think about how to stack items to maximise your storage space. Protect fragile items with appropriate packaging materials and avoid overloading your unit. The more thoughtfully you store your belongings, the easier it’ll be when you need them again.

Choosing the Right Storage Space for Your Needs

We offer a range of unit sizes to suit everything from a few boxes to large furniture, with storage costs that stay flexible depending on what you need. If you’re unsure, check out our unit size estimator to compare storage options and find your fit.
