Baubles, Glühwein & Enchanting Markets: Magical Things to Do in Brussels This December

It’s approaching the most wonderful time of the year, where Christmas trees are excitedly pulled out of storage (ugly Christmas sweaters less willingly so) and Brussels is transformed into a magical winter wonderland.

Both locals and tourists alike are spoilt for choice when it comes to the array of Christmas delights on offer. Whittling down your list of things to do in Brussels in December can be difficult but there are a few items we think should be non-negotiables.

Embrace the Christmas Spirit in Brussels

Whether you’re a Christmas nut(cracker) or not, December in Brussels is incredibly special. It’s a time to celebrate family, friends and perhaps most importantly — a time to indulge. Food plays a pretty big role in Christmas celebrations in Brussels. There’s nothing more comforting than a smoutebollen/oliebollen (deep fried sweet dumplings) — other than maybe a slice or four of a bûche de Noël (Yule log cake).

With Christmas markets galore, it would be easier to tell you how not to find the best festive eats in town.

For the Foodies & Market Fanatics

Winter Wonders — Plaisirs d’Hiver

Considered the flagship market in Brussels, the Winter Wonders Market, also known as Plaisirs d’Hiver, is one market that you really can’t miss — literally. Spread across the city and is home to over 200 vendors and it’s unsurprising that it’s the biggest Christmas market in Brussels. The market starts as early as late November and runs right up until the first week of January.

Winter Wonders is one of those rare experiences that can transport all ages into a place of wonder and pure joy. There’s something for every member of the family to do. Ride the huge Ferris wheel at Marché aux Poissons and get a unique view of the market in its entirety, or head over to Place Sainte-Catherine and hop on the merry-go-round with the kids!

Magic shows, storytelling, artisanal gifts, and of course food, food, food. You’ll need to visit more than once to feel the full effect of this enchanting Brussels market experience.

Place Sainte-Catherine Market

For those looking for that touch of local flavour, Place Sainte-Catherine Market is known as a hub for resident farmers, all of whom are highly committed to organic agriculture. This year it’s on from the 29th of November 2024 to 5 January 2025.

Located in the heart of the Sainte-Catherine district and adorned with twinkling lights, this market is a treat for the senses. The smell of fresh seafood, mulled wine and sweet treats all mingle together to create the perfect Christmas atmosphere.

Christmas Market at Halles Saint-Géry

One of Brussels’ best kept hidden gems, the Halles Saint-Géry offers a unique experience in comparison to the larger markets. Also known as the Continental Winter Creative Market, it’s the perfect place to find handcrafted Christmas gifts for the special people in your life.

Located in the historic covered market hall, this quaint location is home to several artisanal vendors during the holiday season. For those looking for a more alternative market, this one’s for you!

For Those That Love the Outdoors

Ice Skating at Place de Brouckère

From late November to early January, skaters of all ages can be seen gliding across the ice at the Place de Brouckère ice skating rink. This winter favourite is perfect for a family outing or romantic evening with a loved one. We would argue that skating under the twinkling lights of this rink is not only a quintessential part of Winter in Brussels, but a rite of passage.

If you’re feeling a little chilly after skating, why not warm up with a glass of mulled wineglühwein or hot chocolate from one of the nearby stalls. This rink is a must-visit during the Christmas season in Brussels.

Grand Palace Christmas Tree & Light Show

No Christmas, nor city square is complete without a Christmas tree. The Grand Palace is no exception. Already one of the most beautiful in Europe, the square becomes even more so during the festive season, with lights and decorations a plenty.

At centre stage sits the tree — almost 20 metres tall and nothing short of magnificent. There is arguably no experience more magical than that of standing beneath its leaves, lights glowing, baubles shining. Beside the tree sits a traditional nativity scene, adding to the festive charm of the experience.

Light projections and accompanying music come together to create the “Brussels Christmas Light Show”. A carefully curated spectacle, the show illuminates the historic buildings that form the border of the square, including the Gothic-style Town Hall. The show is free to the public and an unmissable experience for anyone visiting the city in December.

For The Artists and the History Buffs

Visit Museums and Exhibitions

Museums and art exhibitions offer an inviting escape from the winter chill. Many museums host special holiday shows, making it an ideal time to explore the city’s rich cultural past and present.

The Magritte Museum has a collection of surrealist art that will evoke emotion even in the those less inclined towards the arts. For the history lovers, the Belvue Museum and Royal Museums of Fine Art both showcase exceptional treasures.

Attend Holiday Concerts and Events

December in Brussels is a whirlwind of festive events and concerts, offering something for everyone. Head to Bozar for elegant classical concerts and exhibitions (we recommend checking out the “Love is Louder Exhibition” running from 12 October to 5 January) or catch exciting indie and electronic performances at Ancienne Belgique

Don’t miss the enchanting Christmas concerts at St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral, perfect for a serene holiday moment. Whether it’s on ice at Place de Brouckère or in a concert hall, Brussels has your December soundtrack covered!
